What outdoor water usage restrictions could mean for babies and pregnant families
Des Moines Water Works Forewarn Outdoor Water Usage Restrictions Could Happen
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), drinking water with nitrate levels above 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm) can cause immediate health problems for some people:
Infants under six months: Their gastrointestinal systems are not fully developed, so they are at risk for methemoglobinemia, also known as blue baby syndrome. This condition occurs when an infant's blood cells carry nitrogen instead of oxygen.
Pregnant or trying to become pregnant: Pregnancy increases the body's oxygen demand, which can increase the risk of methemoglobinemia. Some studies have also found an increased risk of miscarriage or birth defects.
People with certain health conditions: These include low stomach acid levels, anemia, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, acidosis, or sepsis.
Pregnant individuals are at increased risk for methemoglobinemia because pregnancy increases the oxygen demand of the body. Some studies have found an increased risk of miscarriage or birth defects from drinking water contaminated with nitrates. Do not drink water with nitrate levels above 10 mg/L if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
