Birth Freedom Fighter Movement
Fight for Iowa Birth Centers
We have recently begun our fight for Iowa Birth Centers against the state of Iowa in hopes to remove the Certificate-of-Need to open a free-standing birth center in Iowa. We know that there is a critical need for free-standing birth centers in Iowa because there currently are NONE that exist outside of the birthing units in hospitals. Instead, many women are choosing to give birth in rental homes, or even hotels, as a direct lack of birth centers in the state. We believe mothers have the right to choose where they give birth to their child, however, the Certificate-of-Need process makes it nearly impossible for independent healthcare provides to open these birth centers.
Being an independent healthcare provider in Iowa is especially difficult. For example, if you aspire to open an independent practice, such as a birth center, any of the existing hospitals in the state of Iowa have the ability to “veto” the application through the Certificate-of-Need process. Unfortunately, this has caused existing organizations to use this law as a way to keep out what they consider to be “competition.” Without the Certificate-of-Need to open a healthcare practice, we would begin to see more innovation and lower prices in healthcare.
We believe Iowa women should have birth options, and it remains our goal to provide a birth center that supports expecting mothers on their birthing journey!
